ABOUT US

Lake Hopatcong is a 9-mile long lake in Morris and Sussex counties in western New Jersey. It is sometimes mind boggling to think that this moderately sized lake in NJ could be such a succesful breeding ground for high speed single-handed catamaran racers. However, spend one day on the water with this crowd - followed by an afternoon off the water - and you will have all the explanation you need.

The Lake Hopatcong A Class Catamaran ('A Cat') Fleet is the largest, most active fleet in the US, and is one of the largest in the world. With over 26 sailing members, regular weekend fleet races often see 12-15 boats on the starting line. Races are competitive and local knowledge is key, but the LHYC fleet is always happy to impart knowledge and lend a hand. In fact the success of the LHYC A Cat fleet is largely built on their willingness to pitch in and help sailors learn their boat and the tricks of sailing on the lake.

The historic Lake Hopatcong Yacht Club is the home club for the A Cat fleet, and is a fantastic center for regattas, social events and post-race socializing. However, there are many other gathering points around the lake. The Marina del Skeels, Gruber's Island Getaway, Oberman Falls, Speedy's Island Manor, Both Hefele Compounds and Fred's Cabin are just some of the places you'll find A Catters gathering to talk about the day's race, tweak equipment, have a beverage and enjoy the lake atmosphere. Invitations are (almost) never necessary, and the beer is always cold!

If you are interested in joining this amazing crowd, make sure to contact them by filling out the info on the 'Contact' page (see link above). They often have a boat available for a test sail, and are always happy to discuss getting you out on the water!
